Abon Beef (Shredded Beef)


Abon is an Indonesian delicacy made of dried meat fibers, usually black or light brown in colour. It’s usually eaten as side dish and used for topping on rice, noodle, porridge etc. Abon can be stored for quite some times as long as kept in air tight container.

Other than beef abon can be made from many other meat, such as pork, chicken, lamb some even made abon from fish. They are all delicious :)


  • 1 kg of beef
  • 2 liter of water
  • 250 g coconut milk
  • 250 ml vegetable oil


  • 10 shallots
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 4 hazelnut
  • 200 g sugar
  • 1 tea spoon of coriander
  • 1 tea spoon of turmeric powder
  • Lemon grass
  • 0.5 cm of galangal
  • Salt as needed

Cooking instruction

  1. Wash and clean the beef
  2. Cut meat into small pieces to make it easier to shred it later
  3. Boil beef for 1 hour until it get tender
  4. Take meat out of water, hit it evenly
  5. Put beef into pan again and insert all spices and coconut milk
  6. Boil beef again until all the liquid soak in
  7. Take meat out and shred into smooth small pieces
  8. Fry shredded beef until dry
  9. Abon can be stored for 3 weeks if kept in dry air tight container
